Back in 1987 we had been burgled several times. Indeed on one occasion a thief had crept in through the open front door and stolen my briefcase from the hall. Only yards from where my wife and I were sitting in the living room. As a martial artist, then Black Belt 3rd Dan , I gave thought to what one would do if a burglar and I met face to face in the passageway or elsewhere in the home. Clearly it would have to involve some kind of weapons approach. But what?

One day Doreen walked past me carrying a cup of coffee, and as a ‘big tough Black Belt’ I went to “attack” her. Smartly and quickly she smacked the saucer onto my knuckles – Crack! Oh! So painful. It certainly changed my emotions! Like Newton ’s Apple, the solution to the weapon problem flashed into my mind. I sat down and thought. How could one defend oneself with a saucer? Some kind of small hand-size weapon, immediately available and powerful enough to stop even a violent attacker.

A year later the karatetsu was born.

Made of metal with sharp corners and edges, it is carefully designed to be used in any direction and from any angle to repel an attacker met inside the home. It can deliver most effective blows, it can inflict severe pain, fingers (his!) can be locked and much damage can be caused – all by a small easily pocketable almost invisible weapon kept in the shirt or trouser back pocket.

I coined the name from KARA meaning Empty, and TETSU meaning Iron. Empty Iron. Jutsu of course means a martial arts SYSTEM.

A knuckle duster, of which the Karatetsu is a variety, is a prohibited weapon . The Police would certainly arrest anyone carrying it in a public place. But in the home or on one’s property the situation is different. You can use any reasonable means to protect your life and property. You can even use lethal force if your life is in danger. The Karatetsu is not a lethal weapon. It is intended for immediate personal protection in the home . And in this, it is most effective.

It makes a novel and useful key-fob , and doubles as a convenient shopping bag handle . It has uses in isometric exercise training and can apply acupressure techniques to assist in many common ailments, such as headaches and gastritis. Being the exact size and shape (but not weight) as the Karatetsu, the P.E.S.T. facilitates training in the karatetsu-jutsu personal protection techniques . Of itself it is a light harmless piece of plastic. It cannot – and should not – be used for self-defence purposes. That is the job of the actual metal version.
