The Mandatory Command

The What? The essential, absolutely- always - to-be-given command.

If ever you find yourself in a confrontation situation, where you are likely to be involved with defending yourself, it is vitally important that you give this mandatory command.

“Stay There! Don’t come any closer!”

It is essential that you are legally ‘in the right’. What with the Police, the CPS, the strong likelihood of your attacker suing you for damages … whatever.

On perceiving the danger of an attack, always make this command. If he then advances at you, you can legally and morally assume that he is bent on attacking you. He is entering into your personal space. He is a threat to your life and liberty. He is revealing his intention of doing you harm.

You are in fear for your life.

You – and the Jury – will consider that you are – that your were! – justified in taking appropriate action to defend yourself.

Appropriate action? What is appropriate action? You are not a high grade Black Belt expert You are elderly, not fit, not skilled in the martial arts. How qualified are you to judge what is ‘appropriate action’?

Of course you’re not so qualified. As an ordinary man in the street, you have no idea at all as to how much force is reasonable. You are in fear for your life. You just hit him hard! – and hope to survive alive and un-stabbed.

If you are about to be mugged – and there are witnesses within earshot – loudly make your mandatory command. So that witnesses will hear you. Able to justify in Court as to what happened.

If you are about to be mugged – and there are no witnesses within earshot – it might be better not to give any such command: and just hit him with a pre-emptive ‘invisible’ attack. Whack!

As I write, 28th November 2006, two teenage youths have just been sentenced to life imprisonment for mugging and stabbing to death a man in the street – for a total haul of a mobile phone, a credit card and £20!

What would have been the situation, I wonder, had the victim been carrying a stick or umbrella and had known how to use it? I don’t know, you don’t know –

But the victim will never ever know!

But of course matters are rarely that simple…

If he is walking towards you on a pavement, in a public park or down a country lane why on earth should he stop, or change his direction?  Who are you to shout at him! He has every right to be there, the same as you.

You have no right whatsoever to command him to change his direction.

If he continues to (lawfully) walk close by you and you take out his eye or his teeth, who is on the wrong?

Why, YOU of course!

Into Jail, PDQ! And rightly so!

Because you didn’t use that lump of bread sat on your shoulders –

Your Loaf

To Change His Direction, You Must Change Your Direction!

Be alert and aware. As he comes towards you:

Step well to one side, preferably the left, one, two perhaps even three steps.

So that yourself are well out of the line of his oncoming travel.

If, now, he changes direction towards you, give your Mandatory Command:

“STAY THERE! DON’T COME ANY CLOSER!”

  • Now you are in control
  • Now you are legally and morally in the right
  • Now as he continues at you deliver your pre-emptive attack
Why?

Because you were in fear for your life and you reasonable assumed he was about to attack you.
